We finished last season on a high with a double at Warwick, and I’ve no complaints with the way the new season has started after today at Uttoxeter !

DERRICK D’ANJOU built really nicely on his return from injury last time out to finish placed, only beaten 4 lengths, in the 3m novices handicap hurdle. Jumping the last it looked as though he was booked for the win or second, but he got badly squeezed between 2 rivals after the last, and that interference cost him. Still, he’s now been placed on every start in handicaps, and hopefully the win can’t be far away.

Having been placed on 4 of his last 5 starts, AMI DESBOIS was running off a career-high mark of 139 over fences, and carrying 11st 11lbs today in the Staffordshire Plate. He travelled and jumped like a dream, and after taking it up 2 out it looked as though he was finally going to get the big win that he so richly deserves. It wasn’t to be though, as the bottom weight dug deep after the last, and was in front by 1 length at the line. He was getting 21lbs from Ami, and they both pulled well clear from the remainder, so I think it probably has to go down as an unlucky loss after a career-best performance over fences. He’s one that now definitely deserves a summer break !
