26 February

Another rather mixed day at Ffos Las, where the ground was pretty soft. HOLLYWOOD ALL STAR has lost his mojo for us – he travelled well for a long way, but just didn’t pick up at all when the field got racing. He’ll now go to the sales – he benefitted hugely from a change of scenery when he came to us, and I think he’ll do the same in a new yard. He’s just a bit stale.
DERRICK D’ANJOU ran a super race to finish in the places after almost 2 years away from the track with injury. His best form is on better ground, so hopefully we can build on that performance and he’ll be winning next time out.
CALLUM GILHOOLEY was disappointing, but Kielan reported that he just didn’t handle the testing ground. His debut bumper win was on better ground, and I thought he’d actually improve for the more testing surface, but I was wrong. Back to better ground, and probably over hurdles, next time out.

The highlight of the day was probably CRANBROOK CAUSEWAY at Leicester. He’s been in the places a few times this winter, but never looked like winning, so today gave everyone some real encouragement. He travelled strongly at the head of affairs and had a great ding dong battle up the home straight, only to yield late on. Given that the trip was on the short side, and the third was 20-odd lengths behind the pair of them, it was a definite step forward. Perhaps better ground is the key to him too.
