1 January 2018

Happy New Year to everyone – and here’s to a successful 2018.

Conditions at Cheltenham make it hard work today, and it wasn’t a great start to the New Year I’m afraid.

MY CHARITY did not enjoy the ground at all – we’d suspected that he wouldn’t, but you never know for sure until you try – but he at least came back safe and sound and gave his owners the great thrill of having a Cheltenham runner.

AMI DESBOIS was pulled up after 3 out, having made a noise. Hopefully it was just a combination of testing ground and a punishing pace that caught his wind out. We’ll look to go back on better ground and hopefully a less testing race next time out, and fingers crossed that will see him resume winning ways.

SKIPTHECUDDLES ran a nice race in the staying handicap hurdle, but he belted 3 out and came back with a fetlock the size of a football. You can never say that a knock like that damaged his chances, but it certainly didn’t help, and Daryl was confident that until that time he would have made his way into the places. He raced a bit lazily at times too, and so he’s one for whom cheek pieces might be an idea next time out.
